Q: What topic should I submit for consideration for the SECO 20/20 Congress?
A: SECO International is looking for a wide array of topics that are innovative, engaging, inspiring, and informative for Optometrists, AOA Paraoptometrics, Ophthalmic Technicians, Opticians, Practice Administrators, and all practice team members.  SECO’s goal is to offer relevant, timely education and training to help attendees elevate their skills and make their practices more successful. Presentations should not actively promote or advertise products or corporate interests.  Our attendees are interested in hearing sessions from colleagues and topic experts.


Abstracts should address emerging technologies and innovation in optometric patient care and business/practice management.  Some current topics for 2020 to be considered are:

A: The following information is required in order to submit an abstract and to be considered for SECO 20/20:

Other requirements if abstract submitted is accepted:

  • All lecturers will submit (10) test questions per CE hour, excluding learning labs and review courses.
  • Presentations are recorded and/or videotaped for use on SECO University and in other promotions. In addition, pictures are taken for future use.
  • Lecturers are required to submit their final, presentation-ready PowerPoint by January 1, 2020. Keynote, Slide Rocket, or other formats are not allowed.  No further modifications will be accepted after this date.
  • COPE requirement: An outline of 1 ½ page per lecture hour, is required.  You can view a sample here:


Q: What should I write for the Course Description?
A: Please provide a short description for the Presentation/Course and use measurable terms which can be evaluated and are relevant to the suggested topic.

Q: What should I write for Learning Objectives?
A: Well-developed learning outcomes are participant-oriented, observable, and measurable.  Three learning objectives are required per CE hour.  Describe the skills, knowledge, and/or learning outcomes attendees will be able to demonstrate as a result of this activity. (For example: “At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to…”) It is best to describe your learning outcomes using action verbs.

Q: What is Methodology?
A: Methodology refers to how you will present the information (i.e., PowerPoint slides will be used to cover key points and create class discussion; video examples used to provide an understanding of the learning objectives; exercises to increase learning points in the presentation; etc.). Use this area also to explain how your information was formulated and your sources (i.e., case studies, interviews, research, etc.).

Q: What is Lecturer Expertise?
In regard to Lecturer Expertise – you will need to upload your current Curriculum Vitae and, in a few words,, describe your expertise on the session topic – limit 100 words.)

Q: What are the audiences?
The audiences are for whom the material is best suited. For example, the topic of business management (PM) can be discussed and adapted to many audiences.  When submitting a presentation, select one (1) primary audience for whom the material is best suited. Multiple secondary audiences can be selected if the presentation is applicable across many different positions in an optometric practice.

Q: What are the accrediting and other agencies SECO plans to submit to for the SECO 20/20 program?
The following accrediting agencies and other organizations applicable to SECO 20/20:


  • CE Broker, submitted only for qualifying Optometrists licensed in the state of Florida
  • Council on Optometric Practitioner Education (COPE)
  • Texas Optometry Board


SECO International is a COPE (Council on Optometric Practitioner Education), Qualified Administrator.  All courses submitted for consideration will, upon acceptance, be submitted for COPE approval. If the course you are proposing is already COPE-approved, please indicate the COPE course number and expiration date where indicated on the Abstract form.

COPE may contact lecturers directly regarding a course, and lecturer should respond to requests in a timely manner.

Q: When do presentations take place?
A: Educational programming is conducted each day, Wednesday – Sunday (March 4 - 8) of SECO 20/20. Sessions may begin as early as 7:00 a.m. and run throughout the day, ending as late as 9:00 p.m.

Submission of a course abstract is a commitment that the lecturers will be available to speak on any conference day and time as assigned by the SECO Continuing Education Committee.  SECO International has limited options to accommodate lecturer conflicts.

Q: If accepted, how much time will I be given to present?
All ABO/NCLE courses are either 60 or 120 minutes in duration, and COPE, AOA Paraoptometric and JCAHPO are 50 -100 minutes in duration (excluding reviews/learning labs.).  In the Call for Abstracts process, you must submit the length of your presentation. This is purely for planning purposes, and SECO International will assign session durations.

Q: Can I promote any products or services during my presentation?
A: No, SECO does not allow the promotion of products and services during educational sessions. Lecturers can talk about products and services that have been used to solve a problem or address the presentation topic. Whenever possible presenters should suggest alternative products and services as well, no product names or companies (including logo) can be listed on presentations or handouts, no exceptions.

Q: When will I know if my presentation has been accepted for SECO 20/20?
A: The submitter will receive notification from the continuing education team no later than August 1, 2019.

Q: If my abstract is accepted, will I receive any compensation (honorarium, travel and/or housing) for presenting at SECO 20/20?
A: Lecturers will receive an honorarium of between $250 - $350 per lecture hour, based on the audience and type of course/session.  In addition, lecturers may be eligible to receive airfare/ground transportation and hotel accommodations.

Q: If my abstract is accepted, will I receive complimentary registration for SECO 20/20?
A: Submission of an abstract is a commitment to be a registered attendee of the Congress. In accordance with SECO’s rules, registration for SECO 20/20 lecturers is complimentary (Premium Registration Package.)  The Premium Package also includes a one-year subscription to SECO University.  The lecturer must register for the SECO Congress prior to the event (no on-site registration). If lecturer wishes to attend a learning lab or course with an additional fee, the lecturer will be required to pay the additional fee(s) associated.

Q: How are session rooms set up? What audio-visual equipment will be available for my presentation?
A: All session rooms are typically set theater style to maximize seating. There may be a few rooms with limited classroom seating and set as classroom or U-Shape.  A podium is standard in each room for lecturers. Additionally, the following AV equipment will be set in each room:

  • (1) laptop computer at the podium, with final presentation pre-loaded
    • (1) audio connection from computer (to play video)
    • (1) wireless slide advancer for presentation
    • (1) podium microphone / (1) wireless lavalier microphone, and additional mics may be necessary based on the number of lecturers.
    • (1) screen, and depending on the size of room (2) screens may be necessary
    • (1) LCD projector

Facilitated/Panel Presentations may require additional audiovisual and will be determined by the SECO Continuing Education Committee.  Any additional requests will be considered at the discretion of the continuing education program manager and the availability of such resources.

Learning Labs Equipment (Workshops/Hands-on) –

All lecturers selected to participate in a Learning Lab session will receive a form to complete, listing the standard items provided by SECO and the items required for the session.


Learning Labs:

  • Should clearly indicate that all attendees will be provided with hands-on experiences in techniques and procedures.
  • May be scheduled for one, two, or three hours.
  • Lecture time during the learning lab must not exceed ten (10) minutes.
  • Learning Labs size is restricted to a maximum of 24 attendees.
  • The Lecture must indicate whether learning lab participants will have to sit as subjects for other attendees or whether you will provide paid subjects.
  • Lecturers will be personally responsible for providing the necessary subjects, specimens, instrumentation, supplies, and other equipment to conduct their learning lab.
  • SECO must be notified of any additional equipment requiring power that will be utilized during your learning lab.
  • SECO will provide audio-visual equipment, as requested by the lecturer and the equipment must be requested in advance.
  • There is no standard set up for learning labs.
  • SECO will assign a volunteer to assist workshop presenters with preparations for the learning lab.

Additional guidelines and requirements regarding the lecturer’s PowerPoint presentation will be included in the lecturer contract.

Q: I have never presented at a SECO Congress before. What is expected of me?
A: SECO attendees invest a considerable amount of time and expense in attending the annual Congress. For these reasons, SECO works hard to ensure each and every session at the Congress realizes its full potential. Our attendees expect the Lecturer:

  • Will prepare for their event prior to arrival and will to the assigned course room at least 10-minutes prior to their scheduled lecture time.
    • Have significant knowledge and expertise in the subject area and have sufficient presentation skills to communicate effectively.
    • Will engage the audience. The greatest success you can have is to inspire your audience, so they come out of the course buzzing with thoughts and ideas to take back to their practice to implement. You never get a second chance to make a first impression...engage your audience as quickly as possible.
    • Will not, under any circumstance, engage in commercial presentations or promotions.
    • Will be conscious of the time limitation of their presentation.
    • Will not simply read directly from written statements.
    • Understand that materials provided for SECO 20/20 Congress will be added to SECO University ( as well as used for future promotion of the annual Congress.



Q: What is Disclosure and why is it required?
All submissions must reflect original work and must adequately document any overlap with previously published or simultaneously submitted abstracts/presentations from any of the lecturers.   Lecturers must provide disclosures of potential conflicts of interest.  All financial interests, assistance, or relationships with companies, supporters or commercial products that are related to the research (for example, research support, grants, sponsors, stockholders, etc.).  A response to this request must be provided for the presenting lecturer before the abstract can be peer reviewed.  A commercial interest is defined as any entity developing, producing, marketing, reselling or distributing health care goods or services consumed by or used on patients.  SECO has developed a policy to handle any violations to the SECO Disclosure policy. Any reported violations will be researched and handled according to policy, which can include removal from presenting at future conferences.

Q: What is SECO University?
Our year-round education platform, SECO University, features the courses/sessions held at each SECO Congress.  Attendees who purchase a registration that includes year-round access is able to review/take the courses they were unable to attend during the Congress.  In addition, we offer paid annual subscriptions and fee-per-course options for non-attendees.

All courses submitted for the SECO Congress will also be made available on SECO University, utilizing the final presentation and audio recording.

Q: What is the Social Media requirement?
It is requested by SECO International that contracted lecturers provide their social media information for promotional purposes, and that they promote SECO 20/20 on their own channels, in advance. If available, SECO will also request that contracted lecturers provide articles, blogs, etc., for promotion on SECO’s social media channels.

Q: What happens if I do not have all the required information to complete my Abstract?
A: You will have the ability to edit your abstract until the deadline. If you are missing a required piece of information, you can save your work and log back in at a later time to enter the information prior to the submission deadline. Please note: all Abstracts must be complete in order to be considered. Any Abstracts left “Incomplete” will not be considered for SECO 20/20.

Q: Do I have to submit my presentation Abstract online?
A: Online submission of Abstracts is required. E-mail submissions will not be accepted or reviewed.

Q: Do I have to have an email address to submit online?
A: Yes, confirmation and notification will be done via email. Please use an email address you check regularly.

Q: How will I know if my abstract was submitted successfully?
A: Once you have finalized your submission, an email confirmation will be sent to you confirming receipt of the presentation abstract. Before you submit your abstract, please make sure all steps have been completed.

Q:  How many abstracts (or course hours) can I submit?

A:   We welcome as many as you would like to submit!  Preference will be given to lecturers who can provide at least four hours of courses.



Q: What are the review criteria/processes for presentation abstracts?
A: All presentations are peer-reviewed by the SECO Continuing Education Committee volunteers.  Volunteers will consider the following:
• Does the topic address a timely issue or learning gap?
• Can the presented information apply to different-sized practices and a diverse audience?
• Is the topic unique and information not available through other sources?
• Is the course description clear and concise? Can attendees easily tell what to expect by reading it?
• Are the learning objectives clear and can be met in the allotted time?
• Does the presentation support SECO’s high standards and reputation for the best conference sessions?
• Are the proposed lecturer(s) qualified to instruct the course topic?
• If the presentation is focused on a specific audience, is there a proposed lecturer from that audience?  The audience wants to learn from its peers and gain first-hand knowledge from those who have experienced the material or information presented.

Q: How is the review process conducted?
 Volunteers/Reviewers evaluate the submissions based upon quality and criteria noted above. The final program will then be evaluated by SECO’s leadership to ensure the entire educational program is well-balanced. The educational program will be announced in September 2019. All submitters of presentation abstracts will be notified via email whether their presentation has been accepted or declined by August 1, 2019.
